Unfortunate Sequel

Horses Disqualified (Special to “The Times. ") There was a sensational sequel to the Waiohiki Stakes, the chief event at Napier Park, after the race had provided a thrilling finish. In a desperate encounter Jonathan Jo just beat Capronella and Rakanui, with Catterica Bridge some little way back fourth. Rakanui's rider weighed in l£lbs light and in consequence was disqualified, and the rider of Catterick Bridge (A. C. Messervey) who would have been placed third, failed to weigh in at all, and Catterick Bridge was unable, to gather the minor prize. Messervey was lined £5. Dividends were paid on Jonathan Jo and Capronella only. The club had another record day. The afternoon was fine, though windy, and the going was fast. A large attendance put £43,405 10s through the totalisator, against £33,530 10s last year. The total for the two days was £80,708, compared with £63,743 10s. Glad Fox, improved by his race on the first day, won the Ornaliu Hurdles very easily. He was in front before half the journey had been covered, nicely clear of Mimicry and St. Nat, with Caelus and Nightward heading the bunch. Glad Fox was given a breather and nearing the straight ne drew oyt again, eventually winning by ten lengths from Mimicry, who easily beat Nightward, who finished on to take third place from St. Nat. Tracer fell at the second fence, where Silver Crest ran off. Lady Delight and Cot Case made the pace to the straight in the Novice Stakes No. 1 and were first to turn from home,, but Lady Delight did not run off, and in the last few strides Gold Lad headed Cot Case. Gynocium was a poor third and II Corona was next. , Opulent and -Signatory were among the best beginners in the Marewa Handicap, but Signatory did not last long and Opulent led for home, soon xo be joined by Richmond Park, who beat him by a head in the run to the judge. Signatory came again in the straight to finish a length and a-half from tno winner and a head in front of Gavinmore, who was unlucky as he lost several lengths at the start. Merciful began best in the Novice Stakos No. 2, but Gay Senorita soon took up the running and led to the straight from Merciful and Ann Venus, with Gaystock making up ground oil the outer. Gaystock ran on well under pressure and won by four lengths, while Baruch and Nightfoe came through to stage a duel for second place, Baruch prevailing by half a head. Close up were Carey, Ann Venus and Gay Senorita. There was a great finish to the Waiohiki Stakes. Capronella got to the front before the field entered the back stretch, and led past the six furlongs from Rakanui, Tideless, Catterick Bridge, Sun blaze, Jonathan Jo and Glenfalloch. Capronella was still in charge at the half mile, leading by a couple of lengths from Tideless with Rakanui next, then Catterick Bridge, Glenfalloch, Tussock and Jonathan Jo, while Sunblaze was last. Turning into the straight, Rakanui dived through between Capronella and Tideless aud worked to the front, but Capronella stuck tenaciously and Jonathan Jo ranged up on the outer. In a terrific battle home Jonathan Jo prevailed by a head over Capronella, while Rakanui was only a good head away third aud Catterick Bridge was a poor fourth. As mentioned previously, Rakanui was disqualified for weighing in light and Catterick Bridge for not weighing in at all.

The first four horses in the Meean.ee Hack Handicap, for apprentice riders, went over the line almost on equal terms. Citation was first to show out and led to the straight with Rangirin and Blue Moon, while Pink Bonnet was making up ground from the ruck. In a desperate set-to, Blue Moon beat Rangiriri by a head, with Citation and Pink Bonnet half heads away. Kol Ragi set a scorching pace in the Napier Handicap and led to the straight where Sorrell and Tribal Night together had reduced his lead to a couple of lengths. Lord Theio was next, then Royal Heir. .In the run home Sorrell and Tribal Night fought a hard finish in which Sorrel won by a neck, while Lord Theio, a length and ahftlf away, beat Kol Ragi for third place. Panope won the last race of the meeting, the Taradale Hack Handicap, from end to end and paid double figures. She was followed in the run to the straight by Sir Wina, Treasure Tee and Fame Bian. Nothing had a chance with Panope in the run home and she won by four lengths from Treasure Tee, who outstayed Sir Wina, while Fame Bian battled on for fourth.
