General O’Dwyer New Mayor of New York
NEW YORK, Nov. 7. A Democrat, Brigadier-General William O'Dwyer, has been elected Mayor of New York City, succeeding Mr. La Guardia, who is retiring on December 31 after 12 years in office. Early returns indicate that General O’Dwyer polled the largest plurality in the history of New York City over the Republican Jonah Goldstein and the “No Deal Party” candidate Newbold Morris. The American Labour Party, as well as the Democrat Party, supported General O’Dwyer, who was born in Ireland in 1890 and arrived in New York in 1910. He has had a colourful career, having been a grocer, hod-carrier, deckhand, ship’s stoker, barman, policeman, teacher, lawyer, Magistrate, Coimty Court Judge, District Attorney oi Brooklyn, Presidential Minister, and brigadier-general.
