Intense Surrender Barrage To Japs Opposing Diggers

70,000 IN ISLANDS NORTH OF AUSTRALIA.

Received Tuesday 9.30 p.m. SYDNEY, August 13.

An intense surrender propaganda is being directed to the Japanese troops in New Guinea while Australians in anticipation of peace are asking: “When do we go home?” It is estimated that 71,000 Japanese are still opposing the Australian forces. They comprise 13,000 in the Solomons, 9000 in New Guinea, 40,000 in New Britain and 9000 in New Ireland.

The Japanese in New Guinea are being told of the progress of Japan’s peace proposals through the radio public address systems and surrender leaflets. The leaflets, which have already induced one entire enemy unit to surrender, are being dropped over the inland zones from R.A.A.F. planes.
