Notes of the Day

There will be a patriotic shop in Feilding to-day when members of the Cheltenham W.I. and district helpers will be in charge. Donations of vegetables and other commodities will be welcomed. Feilding abattoir statistics for April together with those for the same month last year were: Cattle, 95 (114); sheep, 420 (512); lambs, 45 (3); pigs, 1957 (852). Fees amounted to £317 Is 7d (£176 5s Id). According to the report presented to last evening’s meeting of the Feilding Borough Council, there are now 927 members of the library, and during April 3863 boohs were changed, while rental fees amounted to £24 6s 6d. The well known Methodist missionary, Rev. A. H. Voyee, is to speak at the Makino Public Hall this evening at 7.30 o’clock on “The Solomon Islands.” Rev. Voyce has* a very intimate knowledge of these Islands and his talk this evening in aid of the missionary work should prove both entertaining and instructive. Those associated with the Mayor (Mr. T. L. Scddony on tho occasion of the thanksgiving service in Feilding on Wednesday afternoon included Mr. M. H. Oram, M.P. (Manawatu), Or. A. B. Shannon (chairman Oroua County Council) and Cr. W. G. Clapham (chairman Kiwitea County Council). Following the proceedings there was a good deal of youthful play which went on into the early night and yesterday the town was quiet until the afternoon when youthful spirits were again manifest. Some decorated old-time cars and trucks were employed in a miniature procession which included a truck drawn by a couple of draught horses and trailing behind one of the trucks was the effigy of a European figure. The youths made gay for quite a while. A few of tho exterior decorations were interfered with overnight but generally they Appeared to have been respected. At a meeting of the Lytton Street School Committee, Feilding, Mr. M. liausmann presiding, the resignations of Messrs S. W. Millar and W. Wilkinson, who have been transferred from Feilding, were received with regret and appreciation of their services recorded. It was resolved that, as it appeared that the Education Board had not done anything regarding the overcrowding of the school Ibises, the board be written to for further information. Regarding the buildings at the school, it was decided that a general meeting of householders be held this month for the purpose of placing before the parents, the condition of the school generally and having a petition signed to be forwarded to the Education Board. It was also resolved that the board be written to, pointing out the meed for procuring extra land and asking for urgency in tho matter. (The committee has under offer a parcel of land adjoining the school.) The committee supported the action of the headmaster (Mr. Blick) in taking steps to prevent danger to children from horses in the play area. No action was taken in regard to a request for a horse paddock. It was decided to make application to the board for a new flag, and also to provide a shed for a further 12 cycles. Thirtvfive pupils have applied for admission to the school, and it was resolved that the board be asked for an additional room. Messrs W. F. Drube and N. Northeott were appointed to the .committee to fill vacancies. There were three nominations. The headmaster reported that the school roll was now 416. The audited balance-sheet was adopted and Mr. O. Aldis thanked for examining the accounts. Advice was received that the board’s architect would pay a visit to the school. The wrote the appointment of Miss M. Sundgren as assistant mistress.
