Surrender in Norway Now Complete

LONDON, May 9. All the German forces in Norway have now capitulated. A correspondent says that in the Oslo district the Germans are now confined to barracks. In other parts of the country they have to clear out of all towns by midnight on Friday. British broadcasts have warned them in General Eisenhower’s name that they will be held responsible for any harm to Norwegian people or property. Many were killed in clashes in Oslo last night between Germans and Norwegian patriots, says Reuter’s Oslo correspondent. Thousands of people celebrating the peace had to run for their lives when hand grenades were thrown and shots fired. Firing and heavy detonations continued for some hours. A Swedish broadcast said this afternoon that the Allied military mission had come back to Oslo for the signature of the German commander-in-chief to the unconditional surrender. The Norwegians have applied to Sweden for permission to transport 300,000 German soldiers across Sweden. MOPPING-UP WORK IN COPENHAGEN The British United Press correspondent in Copenhagen reports that British troops are helping to mop up quislings in Copenhagen. Two British cruisers, the Dido and the Birmingham, are anchored in the harbour of Copenhagen. This morning. King Christian opened the first session of the Free Danish Parliament. His guard of honour was made up of British paratroops. The German general commanding the enemy garrison on the Danish island of Bornholm has capitulated and agreed that his forces will surrender their arms.
