West End School

Having a satisfactory financial balance, the West End School Committee on Wednesday evening decided to expend up to £ls in play material for the infants and hand-work requirements, tho purchase of these being left in the hands of the headmaster (Mr. H. W. Jackson). The headmaster reported that the average roll for the past month had been 380, with a satisfactory average attendance. Miss M. Saveli, of the teaching staff, had been absent for a week through indisposition, and Mr. J. L. C. Davey had taken her place. He would be remaining at the school in the meantime as a supernumerary. Favourable comment was passed on tho school picnic, held recently at the Esplanade. The fact that the dux of both the Boys’ High School and the Girls' High School last year were former pupil s of the West End School was remarked upon with favourable reference to the conduct of the school under Mr. Jackson's headmastership. It was pointed out also that another former pupil of the school had attained high honours in history. The committee granted an application from supporters of tho Anglican Church for the use of the school hall in April for a gala day.
