Indian Troops Reach Mandalay
Burma Road Now In Allied Hands (By Telegraph—Presa Assn.—Copyright.) Received Friday, 12.50 a.m. BOMBAY, March 8. “The Nineteeth Indian Division advanced swiftly to the northern outskirts of Mandalay,” states a Southeast Asia Command communique. *‘ In our bridgeheads west of Mandalay troops of the Twentieth Indian Division captured a village in the southeast sector. Gurkha troops overran the Japanese position which remained behind our lines and wiped out the enemy in hand-to-hand fighting. British Second Division troops captured two more villages. The toll of enemy dead in the Meiktila operations has now risen to 3000.” Chinese troops have captured New Lashio at the junction of the Burma Road and the railway from Rangoon.
