Southern Invasion Sweeping North
PRISONERS TAKEN NOW OVER 65,000 Received Wednesday, 12.5 a.m. LONDON, Sept. 5. The battered German Army in the Saone Valley is making an all-out effort to get through to the Belfort Gap and into Germany before it is closed by the Allied advance, says Reuter’s correspondent at Mediterranean headquarters, Neither the French nor American advances north of Lyons met any serious opposition yesterday, the Germans having cleared out from the whole area, They are being pursued full-tilt to the German frontier. “Seventh Army forces are continuing their rapid advance in the Saone Valley against ineffectual resistance,” states an Allied communique. “French elements reached the outskirts oi Macon and the town of St. Bonnet de Bruyeres. Further west the Americans east of the Saone advanced beyond Montrevel. “The French took prisoner 2400 in the capture of Viliefranche. The total number taken prisoner in Southern France is now past 65,000.”
