Spain Has Nothing in Common With Nazism

WILL NOT HARBOUR REFUGEES Received Monday, 7.30 p.m. WASHINGTON, Sept. S. The Spanish Embassy issued a statement that some days ago the American press carried a story that an appeal had been made to the Spanish people exhorting them to oust the Franco regime, and making several charges against the Spanish Government. “The Spanish Government Embassy, speaking in the name of the Spanish Government, wants to state that none of these accusations is true. Spain has not been turned into a haven for French Fascists and only a very small number of German Customs officers unable to reach Germany have arrived in Spain and they were immediately interned in the Miranda de Ebro concentration camp. No one ever contemplated providing a hiding place ia Spain for the enemies of Allied countries. Six German ships which arrived at Paeajes were immediately interned. “The Spanish Government wishes to stress once more the fact that the Spanish regime has nothing in common with National Socialism which is condemned by the Church while Spain’s own regime is essentially based on Christian principles.” The United Press points out that the Embassy statement is a reply to charges broadcast by the Moscow radio.
