Defective Tunnels
Provided the required amount of skilled labour is forthcoming, reconstruction work on the Fordell and Turakina tunnels will be finished within a year or 15 months, according to an estimate of the engineer-in-charge, Mr. E. D. Kalaugher. After that the laying of the lino and ballasting will be necessity. The mimber of men on the job at present is about 100. The tunnels are to bo relined with concrete, varying In thickness from 211 n. at the foot of the walls to 12in. at the arch. The lining will reduce the tunnel Width, but the height will be Increased, as the floor is being lowered. A concrete base, 18in. thick, Is to be placed across the full width beneath the track*
