Eisenhower’s Command Extended

WASHINGTON, Aug. 30. High quarters have disclosed that General Eisenhower’s Command has been extended to include General Patch’s Seventh Army at present sweeping northward from the Mediterranean. It is pointed out that although General Patch’s forces came from the Mediterranean their operations are tied with those under General Eisenhower rather than the Mediterranean campaign under General Wilson.

A new command organisation in France, giving General Bradley equal Btatus with General Montgomery as an army group commander, is nearly ready for the final announcement, says the Associated Press. When Shaef correspondents earlier reported such a change the news was received critically in some quarters in Britain and inter-

preted as demotion for General Montgomery.

Informed quarters in Washington say that the British criticism is unwarranted and the change has become inevitable since General Eisenhower took his headquarters to France and assumed personal command of the operations. They add that an eventual change was clearly understood by tho Americans—and, they thought, by the British—even before the invasion. The idea was that General Montgomery would be overall commander ol the ground forces while the British composed the hulk of the troops, but that as soon as the American strength was built up and a break-through achieved a new army group would be formed in order to simplify command structures.
