Feilding Borough

SUPPORT FOR CITIZENS’ TICKET Despite the adverse weather condi tions the polling in Feilding was heavy but burgesses had acted on the advice of voting early so that the polling was spread over the day without any undue rush or hold-up at the five booths. Those supporting the retiring council plus the new members suggested worked hard throughout the polling hours as did the Labour Party organisation and proceedings were conducted without any untoward incident.

As was anticipated the counting took considerable time and it was not until just after 8 p.m. that the first results were announced and these concerned the Power Board and Hospital Board contests. In the case of the Power Board the sitting member, Mr. P. G. Guy, was endorsed with a majority of 504 over his opponent, Mr. A. J. Kellow. Mr. V. E. Smith had no difficulty in retaining his seat on the Hospital Board securing a majority of 792 over his opponent, Mr. B. HoDday. For the Foxton Harbour Board seat Mr. H. J. Dewe, the sitting member, secured the verdict with just under 1000 majority over Mr. W. A. Salt, the Labour nominee. It was not until after 9 p.m. that the result of the election for the council, lor which there were 22 candidates, was announced. The verdict of electors here was for the retiring councillors with the exception of Councillor L. Bould who suffered defeat. Citizens endorsed the candidature of Cr. P. G. Guy while it also supported those three citizens, Messrs. Mclnnes, Stevens and Jamieson who were associated with the retiring councillors in the contest. Next to Cr. Guy who polled well for the Labour interests and undoubtedly received the backing of many citizens in addition to the maximum Labour vote, Mr. C. H. Fry, a Labour candidate, polled well. Other wise Labour candidates suffered a clear-cut defeat as did also the several Independent candidates. Cr. H. J. Dewe obtained the highest vote of 1377, while Mr. P, P. Stevens, a new candidate, was awarded second place with a poll of 1309 votes. The town has undoubtedly returned a strong council. Voting for a representative on the Manawatu Catchment Board undoubtedly created a difficulty among electors since the candidates were comparatively unknown and the informal voting on this issue must be a record. Mr. Phillips, Mayor of Levin, proved successful in this contest.

Voters supported the return of Messrs. Elliot and Fitzherbert for the Wellington Harbour Board. The total votes cast were 2066 on a roll strength of approximately 3200. The time taken to vote proved a facto.since it was a matter of an average of four minutes due to the number of issues upon which electors had to make a decision. The staff worked well and the returning officer, Mr. C. H. Tate, stated that everything went off smooth ly. Considerable interest was taken in the election for representatives for the western riding of the Oroua County Council where seven candidates were offering for the four seats. The retiring councillors, Messrs. Page, Shannon and McLennan were returned wnile the new councillor is Mr. C. Abbiss who fills the vacancy caused by the retirement of Cr. T. Green. The Labour nominee, Mr Ince, received very little support while Mr. Page topped the poll. In the contest for the Hospital Board seat Mr. B. McLeod won easily. In the case of the Kiwitea County contests interest was keen over the Hospital Board election in which the sitting member, Mr. J. H. Williamson, I faced a close contest with Mr. J. W. | Batchelar, who was defeated by 22! votes. Cr. L. T. McLean was returned | for the Waituna riding, his opponent, being Mr. H. D. Richardson. Considerable interest was taken in the counties of Pohangina, Kiwitea and Oroua in the contest between Messrs. W. McKay and S. J. Strahan for the seat on the Manawatu Catchment Board, the contest resulting in Mr. W. McKay being returned. Details are given below: — FEILDING BOROUGH COUNCIL * Bould, L. A. B 80S Boyd, A.
