Obituary

MRS. P. T. ARCUS There passed away on August 28 at her residence an old and highly respected pioneer of Levin in the person of Mrs. P. T. Arcus. Born at Poxton in 1866, a daughter of the late Mr. S. Howan, she spent her early life in the teaching profession in tho Wanganui and Wellington districts. From Mana* kau she was appointed solo teacher of the first school opened at Koreru, now Ivoputaroa to which she journeyed on horseback through the bush directed by crudely written signs nailed to the native trees along the track. Early settlers will remember her as a popular and loved teacher of the now scattered old scholars. A staunch member of the Methodist Church and local women’s organisations, Mrs. Arcus will be greatly missed in Levin where she has resided since her marriage in 1896. Left to mourn her passing are her husband, the well known retired builder of Levin, three sons, Messrs. Colvin, Leslie and Gilbert (Levin), and one daughter, Miss Vera Arcus, of the firm of McGreur and Bone, Hawera, and nine grandchildren. Sisters of tho deceased lady are Mesdames J. W. Walsh, J. N. Irvine (Hamilton), and F. S. Birch (Longburn), and there is one brother, Mr. W. C. Howan, of Wellington South.
