French Coast and Airfields Pounded

Received Friday, 12.50 a.m. LONDON, Sept. f. Waves of R.A.F. bombers pounded the French coast from Boulogne to Calais for over an hour last night. The largest Spitfire armada yet used by the Fighter Command on a single operation, escorted R.A.F. and American bombers in an attack on the airfields at Lille and Vitry-on-Artois. Enemy fighters came up in considerable force for the offensive against the Nord airfield at Lille and dogfights went on beyond the French coast on the way lack. American Marauders shot down six German fighters and damaged many more while giving close protection to the bombers. A Norwegian pilot destroyed one enemy, a Canadian destroyed one, and an English pilot got one, making a total of nine for the operation. Good bombing results were obtained.
