American Casualties in Review

Received Friday, fi.2o p.m. WASHINGTON, Sept. 3.

After an inspection of gun emplacements, it is estimated 6000 American lives were saved by the Japanese flight from Kiska, said the Acting-Secretary of War, Mr. McCloy. American casualties in Sicily of 7500 killed, wounded and missing, have brought the army’s total war losses to 70,872, of which 9209 were killed, 20,159 wounded, 21,764 missing and 19,740 prisoners. More than 9000 wounded have fully recovered and returned to active duty. Mr. McCloy added that although the Sicilian operation was relatively easy and the unsubstantial opposition encountered on the beaches cost a number of lives, future operations would doubtless cost more.
