Flight Sergeant L. W. Kennedy, of the K.N.Z.A.F. in Scotland, son of Air. and Mrs. J. Kennedy, of College Street, has -recently been promoted to Pilot 1 Officer, according to advice received by his parents. * j A London cable announces the death of Air, W. W. Jacobs, the well-known novelist, at the age of 80 years. He wrote many stories of seafaring men and was part author of a play, “Beauty | and the Barge.” He excelled in short stories of the occult. The very welcome news that his sou, Private Roy Nielsen, who was reported missing two and a-half years ago, is now safe iu an N.Z.E.F. camp, has been received by Mr. N. A. Nielsen, of Aiarton. Private Nielsen took-part, in tho Crete campaign, and was reported missing on April 26, 1941. Afr. W. R. Burns, presiding at a meeting of the Atarist Brothers Old Boys Football Club, made a presentation to the secretary, Air. W. G. Singleton, who is leaving for Auckland. He expressed appreciation of the work done by Air. Singleton, to whose capabilities Bro. Bernard also paid tribute. A Dunedin telegram records the death of Dr. William Evans, aged 68, who was among the best-known general practitioners. He had been in practice for 40 years. Jle was a prominent Freemason and was closely associated with sport, particularly Rugby, being president of the Otago Rugbv Union in 1925. Flight Sergeaut Bernard Cookslev. R.N.Z.A.F., who ha? been reported missing on air operations, is a son of Mr. and Airs. J. A. Cookslcy, of Opiki, and for some time has been a member of a famous bomber squadron in Britain. He lias been in the K.N.Z.A.F. for ox er two years and speut 14 months in Canada. Their many friends will join with Air. and AJre. Cooksley iu the hope that they will soon have reassuring news of their sou.
