Presentation of Medals at Palmerston North Hospital

There was a large gathering of nurses and relatives at the Palmerston North | hospital yesterday L> witness the presentation of medals to sixteen successful nurses, who had passed the State examination for nurses in New Zealand. I Among those at the presentation were tlte Mayor and Mayoress, Air. and Airs. | A. E. Mansford; Miss L, Ah Banks, president of the New Zealand Registered Nurses’ Association and matron of the; hospital; Mr. .1. A. Nash, chairman of the Hospital Board; Air. J. H. North, medical superintendent and Mr. I_>. Collis. A short concert programme by the nurses opened proceeding's and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Before calling upon Aliss Banks to present (lie medals, Air. Nash made reference to the hard work required to gain them. Of the. seventeen nurses who had entered fur the examination, sixteen had passed, a fact which reflected great credit not only on the girls themselves, but also on the matron and the tutors. The medal was evidence that the nurse had completed three years and throe months' training, her name was placed on the register of trained nurses and she was entitled to practice her profession. The term served was not only very interesting, but an arduous one. First of all the nurse had to spend four weeks in the preliminary school and liven In her first year, she studied .many subjects such as anatomy, physiology, elementary dietetics and she had to sit for the preliminary State examination at from twelve to fifteen monlhs. At the end of her second year, she had to pass her training school examination in medical, surgical nursing and dietetics. Then, of course, came the State examination. Air. Nash expressed appreciation for the fine work being done by the nursing service and especially by Miss Banks to whom the Hoard was very grateful for the interest she took in the patients and hospital generally. The nurses wlm received medals were: Misses- N. Broker, 1). Hawkins, V. Healey, L. Aleddingi, J. Moran, K. Aloran, E. Newrick, Z. O'Connor, AI. A. O'Reilly, (J. Smith, K. Spelling, ..undgren, 15. B. Thomson, T. Now, and ... Wills. Special prizes were presented by Air. Alansford, who warmly congratulated the nurses as follows:—For practical nursing (awarded by the Alanawatu branch of the Registered Nurses' Association): Nurse Newrick; first in hospital final (chairman’s prize): Nurse J. Aloran; essay competition open to all nurses in New Zealand (awarded by Registered Nurses’ Association of New Zealand): Nurse K. Aloran. Air. North also added his appreciation of the work being done by the nurses. Aliss Banks returned thanks to the speakers for their kindly references to herself and the nurses and to the visitors for their attendance. Afternoon tea concluded the gathering.
