Labour Candidate for Manawatu

A well attended meeting of electors at Awapuiii was addressed by the Labour candidate, Cpl. W. H. Oliver, on Tuesday evening. He said that the Labour Party by expanding credit for purchasing power soon after it had assumed office had given the people of New Zealand a new start in life. The Labour Government had helped the farming community by the revaluation of mortgages and the provision of the guaranteed price. The candidate claimed that by its import trade restrictions the Labour Government had been able to obtain machinery which' had become vital to the war effort of the country. After answering a number of questions the meeting closed with a vote of thanks and confidence in the Labour Party.

Speaking at Oroua Downs on Wednesday evening Cpl. Oliver dealt with the Government’s housing policy, quoting figures showing the extent to which the Labour Party had met the urgent demand for housing. He said that the Labour Party’s policy followed closely those principles which assured moral development and economic security and provided the true foundations for spiritual wellbeing. He had nothing to say from a personal point of view of any other party but was guided by a sincere desire to help all mankind and to make New Zealand fit for those who returned from overseas. A wealth of experience of the mistakes of the last war was proof enough that new methods were needed to handle rehabilitation questions and Labour’s plans, he claimed, were designed to meet every circumstance. Votes of thanks and confidence concluded the meeting.
