SYDNEY, Aug. 30. On their visit to the war front in New Guinea the United States Undersecretary for War (Mr. R. P. Patterson) and the Director of Production in the office of the United States Sec retary for War (Mr. Knudsen) had an insight into the vast work that has gone into holding the Japanese and consolidating the Allied positions in the past year. They saw at Port Moresby a base which barely a year ago was the Allies’ last stronghold outside Australia and the goal of the Japanese driving across the Owen Stanley mountains. Now it ts the centre of Allied striking power backed up by sub-bases in the forward areas, while the Japanese have been thrown back to the defensive at Sala maua. The party’B tour included a flight across the Owen Stanleys and a visit to Buna. Together with General Blarney, with whom they conferred at a New Guinea base, the party has now return ed to the mainland.
