Men’s Hockey Final

In one of the fastest, most open finals seen for several years in Palmerston North, Air Force A emerged victorious over Broadway by the narrow margin of 3—2 on Saturday. The game was full of interest right from the start, opening incidents including an Air Force shot which rebounded off the upright, and a backhand shot from the Broadway left wing which narrow’Jy missed the goal. A nice goal by Watts placed Broadway in. the lead after ten minutes’ play, and it was not till nearly half-time that Dentice equalised for Air Force. The second spell saw strong attacks by both teams, Dentice eventually scoring again for Air Force. Almost immediately, Broadway swept down field, Ward bringing the score to 2 all. With i j minutes to go, the Air Force forwards caught the Broadway backs out of position, and the goalkeeper saved the situation, but incurred a penalty bully for obstruction. Farmer turned this bull} to account, giving Air Force the lead, 3 —2. Play continued at a very fast pace, both goalkeepers being kept fairly busy, and with Broadway apparently having the advantage. O’Brien (Air Force) brought off a sensational save when a score seemed certain, and shortly before the final whistle, Adcock penetrated the Air Force goal from a penalty corner, but the ball had not been stopped cleanly. The referees were Messrs L. Rendle and R. Hoare. A representative game against Wellington (at Wellington) is planned for next Saturday, and plans for the conclusion of the hockey season will be discussed at Wednesday’s meeting oi the executive.
