Library Team Wins Rees Cup Outright

POST OFFICE PLAYERS GOOD SECOND The interest created by the Little i’heatre Society’s inter house festival brought the gratifying result of a packed Opera House for the final night when three excellent presentations ia striking contrast were given. Following were last night’s team* and players: — Palmerston North City Library ia "It’s a Small World" (Philip Johnson); the cast, Alisses AI. Cranston, J. Thomson, P. Thorburn, H. Johansen and B. Smillie. Producer: Mrs. E. Lovell. Public Trust in "Good Blood—Bad Blood" (Walter Hudd); the cast, Misses J. Beattie, J. Wolf, K. Aliller, Airs. E. Hunt, Messrs. H. J. Murrell and P. W. Minogue. Producer: Aliss P. Harman. Post Office Players in "The Willing Horse" (Isobel Andrews); the cast, Alesdames E. Honey, R. Wild, R. Reeves, G. Gair, P. Young, Alisses P. Wilson, E. Bcott, Af. Williams, L. Alorton and J. Clark. Producer: Air* E. .J. Smith. After commenting on the plays and individual characterisations the adjudicator, Airs. Lorna Bristow, awarded the Rees Cup to the Library team (won outright), with the Post Office Player* two murks behind iu second place. The lioscu team in "Novelette" (played the first night) was third but exceeded the time limit of 45 minutes. Mr. R. Rees, donor of the cup, presented tho trophy to Mrs. Lovell, the producer, and said this was the easiest part. He voiced Ids pleasure that the festival had achieved such a measure of success in bringing in new players to find such means of expressing themselves. Thu silver star, donated bv Air. W. M. Sexton for the best individual performance of a player who had not taken a leading part in a festival, waa awarded to Mrs. R. Wild, who played the part of Mrs. King with the Post Office team in "The Willing Horse." Before introducing the Alayor, Air. A. E. Alansford, Mr. E. J. Smith, president of the society and producer of the second play, offered his congratulations to Mrs. Lovell and Air. T. Kingston, producer of "Novelette." He thanked the audience for their appreciation and attendance in such large numbers and announced that Airs. Bristow had offered a cup, to be known as the Lorna Bristow' Cup, to replace the Rees Cup. (Applause.) As chairman of the Palmerston North Patriotic Committee, the Mayor expressed thanks to tne Little Theatre Society for their fine gesture in donating the net proceeds of the festival to the present appeal. They had been the first society to start the appeal by the donation of £SO from a stage production and others had followed, lie congratulated the committee on staging the festival, which was of educational and cultural value and gave member* something to work for. Air. Mans ford expressed pleasure in seeing Airs. Bristow filling the position of judge and felt sure she must be glad to return among her old friends and see the progress made in the society she had established. Air. Smith thanked the Alavor, also Aliss Helen Muir, who had provided incidental music, Air. A. McKay, stage manager, and all those who gave assistance off stage. Later members of the teams and producers met Airs. Bristow for detailed criticism and advice.
