Fame—and Fortune for Songs
Making £IOOO a year from* her'lyrics, Helen Taylor (Mrs. Sidney Rothschild! was far from poor when she died recently in a London basement flat. This was stated recently by May Brahe (Mrs. George Morgan), of Elizabeth Bay, Sydney, who for 30 years was a friend and working partner of Helen Taylor. They won fame as creators of the song, “I Passed by Your i Window”—words by Helen Taylor, j music by May Brahe, j Interviewed, Mrs. Morgan was anxious to clcai; up the misapprehen- ! sion about her partner. “There seeni6 to be an idea that Helen Taylor died ,iu poverty,” she said. “In addition to 'the income from her lyrics, her husJband w r as a member of the Stock Exchange. She was living in a basement 'Cat because basement flats are those ,moet sought after in England to-day.” Friendly, vivacious May Brahe looks 'buck almost with surprise to the time, ’3O years ago, when she set out for England with an income of £2 a week, to seek faipe. A London linn of music publishers introduced her to Helen T&ylor, and their partnership began from that day. Since her return from England, Mrs. Morgan has published several songs, writing both words and music.
