Passing of Makamako Pioneer
MRS. ELLEN GROVES The death occurred at her residence, Makomako, recently of .Mrs. Ellen Groves, one of tho fast diminishing band.of sturdy pioneers, who settled in this district over 50 years ago. The late Mrs. Groves was born in Fulbrook, England, in 1864, and eleven years later, she came with her parents to New Zealand. After landing at Napier, the family resided at Puketapu for some time later removing to Woodville, where her marriage to Mr. Frank Groves took place in ISS4. Mr. and Mrs. Groves then took up a bush section at Makomako. During Mrs. Groves’ long residence here, she had been actively concerned with the many movements associated'with the progress of the district, and experienced many ot the difficulties and hardship? of the pioneering days. The funeral took place at the Ballauco cemetery, the largo number present and the floral tributes giving evidence of the esteem in which the deceased lady was held. The service at the Methodist Church and at the graveside was conducted by tho Rev. E. A. Harkness, Mrs. Harkncss presiding at the organ. The pall-bear-ers were Messrs F. C., C. E., and E. L. Groves, W. E. C. Angove, O. Sountag, and W. G. Eising. Left to mourn their loss aro her husband, three sons, Messrs F. C. (Hukunui), C. E. (Pirongia), and E. L. Groves (Makomako), also four daughters, Mrs, A. Eddie (Hastings), Mesdames O. Sountag, W. Angove, and Miss R. Groves, Makomako. At a memorial service held in the Methodist Church on June 27, Rev. Harkness referred to Mrs. Groves’ many associations with the work of the church. She had been superintendent of the Sunday School for many years, vice-president of a very flourishing Christian Endeavour, and was also responsible for collecting the greater part of the money for the building of the local church which stands as a lasting memorial to an ardent church worker.
