Women’s Institutes

MILSON. The annual meeting: was held on Wednesday, when an interesting report of the year’s activities was read by the secretary (Mrs White) and the financial statement by Mrs Wood, in the absence of the treasurer (Mrs Carne). Mrs Wood also read a statement on the soldiers’ parcels 1 fund. There was no election for the comI mittee, the president and the present . members being willing to carry on for a further period with the addition of Mesdames Dymock and Carruthers. The ■ circle conveners are: —Drama, Miss Terry; soldiers’ parcels, Mrs Wood; singing, Mrs Bigham; arts and crafts, Mrs Child; gardening, Mrs Anderson; home nursing. Mrs. Hammond; hospital visiting, Mrs l’enketh. Mrs no wan was the winner of the two shillings competition. I Community singing led by Mrs Bigham was enjoyed. The points prizes for the year resulted: Decorative, Mrs Child 1, Mrs Richardson 2, Mrs Wood 3; cluster, Mrs Butcher 1, Mrs Pen trice 2, Mrs nlbrecht 3; single bloom, Mrs Richardson l, Mrs Prentice 2, Mrs Butcher 3; vegetables, Mrs Wood 1, Mrs Rees 2, Miss Rowan 3. The hostesses for the April meeting will bo Mesdames Morris, Middleton, McDonald, O'Connor, Osborne, W. Prentice, H. Prentice, S. Penketh, Peck, Proctor, Price, Rabone, Richardson, Regan, Pike and Miss Rowan. OROUA DOWNS. Mrs. F. W. Marchant presided over a good attendance at the February meeting. Correspondence included a notice from the Manawatu Federation concerning the annual meeting. An invitation to Rangiotu W.I. birthday social and dance. ! Betters of thanks fiom Signalman H. ; Thompson and D.A.C. Trevor Albrey for parcels received in good order. Nominations for president and the committee were then taken. It was decided to hold a dance in celebration of the 11th birthday and full arrangements for this were made. Mrs. ltaikes of ilie W.W.S.A. demonstrated the making of camouflage nets. It was decided that the members endeavour to meet as early as possible each Institute day and work on the nets. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Raikes. Competitions resulted: Best bloom, Miss K. Dench; bottle of preserved fruit, Mrs. Albrey. WAIATA The first meeting of the year of the Waiata Institute was held at the home of Mrs. Chambers. There was a fair attendance of members. Mrs. Chambers (president) welcomed visitors. Nominations were received for the committee for the new year. Resignations were received with much regret of the President, Mrs. Chambers and secretary, Mrs. Mellar. Mrs. A. Simpson, Waiata, was elected the new President. Mrs. Barrie, Feilding, gave a very interesting demonstration on bed making and bandaging (first aid) and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. The best bloom competition resulted: Mrs Redshaw 1, Mrs. Chambers 2, Mrs Bailey 3. Ten soldiers’ parcels were sent away last month. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Billett. OPIKI. Tlio February meeting was presided over by Miss L. Cooksley. The three monthly parcels for soldiers were packed again this month. Correspondence was received regarding the Manawhenua Group Rally to be held at Linton. The delegates for the Manawatu Federation meeting will be elected next month. Nominations for the president and committee were taken and will be held open until next meeting. Mrs. J. Aitchison and Mrs. G. Larsen will again buy the soldiers’ parcels as they did last year. Pte. A. Young, returned from the Middle East, gave a short talk about the parcels packed and sent by the lnstituo overseas. Competitions resulted: Best bloom, Mrs. P. Krivan 1, Miss M. Wilson 2, Mrs. J. Aitchison 3; tomatoes (quality), Mrs. P. Krivan 1, Mrs, Gregory 2, Mrs Horn 3. Competitions for next month will be best bloom and a lady’s spray (not more than Bin. long). Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. Henderson, Mrs. Gregory and Mrs Irwin and the hostesses for next meeting will be Mesdames Aitchison, Larsen, Cooksley and Jackson. RANGIOTU. Mrs. R,ussell presided over a good attendance in February. Letters from soldiers overseas were read thanking the Institute for parcels received. There was also an invitation to members from the Naumai Institute to attend their first birthday. Arrangements for the husbands’ evening to be held in March were finalised, each member to provide a plate of cakes and their own desert spoons for their family. As the weather is now so unsettled it was decided to abandon the picnic. Mesdames Beard and Hunter provided the meeting with two competitions which proved very Interesting. Competition winners were: Best two bottles of jam, Mrs. Pearse 1, Mrs Jepson 2; best collection of root vegetables, Mrs. Pearse 1, Mrs Jepson 2, Mrs Griffen 3; best bloom, Mrs Pearse 1, Mrs Jepson 2, Mrs Alve 3. Next month's competitions will be patched working trousers and a bowl of flowers to measure no more than Gins, across base and 4ins high, and the best bloom. Hostesses will be Mesdames Hunter, Pearse and Graham. APITI. % The annual meeting was attended by a large gathering of members and visitors and three new members Mesdames D. C. Buckrnan, S. Knight and M. Heap Were elected. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs. J. H. Cowan in her bereavement. The suggestion of holding two conferences, one in each- Island, met with the favour of the institute which will be represented if such conferences are arranged. Mrs. McNicol presented a splendid report of the year’s activities, showing that meetings had been well attended and that members take keen interest In all the doings of the Institute which takes an important part in the community life. The President, Mrs. W. M. Duncan thanked her committee and members for whole-hearted co-operation throughout the year. Mrs. W. Hogan presented the balance sheet disclosing a satisfactory financial position. Mrs. Gerlce, of the Oroua Federation congratulated the Institute on the successful year concluded and wished members happiness in their future undertakings. She then presented the points prizes for the year as follow:—Flowers, Miss Mclntyre 1, and Mrs M. A. Hariand 2; aggregate points for cookery, vegetables and handwork, Miss Mclntyre 1, Miss Strahan 2, Mrs F. Munro and Miss B. Chureher equal 3; junior cup presented by Mrs Arthur Prince was again won by Miss Mclntyre with Miss B. Chureher as runner-up; most entries prize, Mrs D. McNicol. Points prizes were donated by Mesdames G. Duncan, A. W. Bensemann, W. Hogan, W. Duncan and Miss Mclntyre. Mrs W. Duncan was re-elected President and the committee are Mesdames A. W. Bensemann, W. Hogan, R. Hooper, D. McNicol, T. K. McLean, J. R. Osborne, E. A. Payton, A. E. Prujean, C. M. Stanley, G. Watkins and Miss Strahan. Mrs Stanley was nominated for the Federation executive. The roll call, Uses of a Lemon, provided a variety of useful answers, the judges awarding Mrs Munro 1, and Mrs. Hooper 2. Prizes for the ufternoon competitions were donated by Mesdames Stanley, Prujean, Bensemann Munro and J. Malone and the judging was done by Mesdames Gerke, Schmidt and Boyce of Kimboicun as follows: Champion aster, Miss Strahan 1, Miss N. Hogan 2, Mrs R. V. Stewart 3; best 3 asters, Mrs R. V. Stewart 1, Mrs N. Ilogan 2, Mrs L. Martin 3; vase of flowers, Mrs Roberts 1, Mrs Hooper 2, Mrs Forbes 3; best 6 vegetables, Mrs Hooper 1, Mrs Duncan 2, Mrs Hogan 3; heaviest potato, Mrs Duncan I and 3, Mrs Payton 2, Mrs R. V. Stewart equal 3. There was an exhibition of handwork done by the high school girls, showing the type of goods they will make to aid their patriotic effort for this year. Mrs. Boyce demonstrated the making of novelty sprays from bread and the dainty work was greatly admired. Mrs Munro

voiced the thanks of the members to the president, secretary and treasurer and commitee for their services and flowers were presented them by Mrs Bensemann. Mrs Gerke was also the recipient of flowers from the Institute. Mesdames Bensemann, Brazier and H. Schmidt served afternoon tea and arranged floral decorations of dahlias. WHAKARONGO. Mrs S. Oxenham presided over a fair attendance at the February meeting. The forthcoming flower show was discussed. An interesting talk on famous actors was given by Mrs. Robinson and the roll call was “My Favourite Actor.’’ Owing to her leaving the district Mrs Crowley has resigned her position from the committee and Institutue. During the afternoon Mrs Oxenham took the opportunity of presenting Mrs. Crowley with a gift saying how sorry they were to lose a valuable member. The flower competition resulted: Mrs F. Smith 1, Mrs Hastings 2, Mrs Oxenham 3. A jumble material competition was won by Mrs Eagle. The hostesses for afternoon tea were Mesdames Johanson, Ilarrowfield and Clark. MAKINO There was a good attendance at the annual meeting, Mrs. W. E. Baker presiding. It was decided that each membei grow the Institute flower (Iceland poppy) and to have a monthly competition for same for a point’s prize at the end of the year. Members were also asked to bring a vase of flowers each month for decorative purposes. -Correspondence re the annual general meeting, etc., was read. A donation of 10s was received from Mrs. Prouse for a soldier’s parcel and a letter of thanks is to be forwarded her. Mrs. J. Camplin, Mrs. A. Wishnowsky and Miss G. Schultz were elected as new members. Members were asked to dig their potatoes for the individual effort, by the April meeting. Moneyboxes were presented to the two new Institute babies, Selwyn Wishnowsky and Walter Thompson, and the Mesdames. Wilton, senr., Jenkins, Barber and Malone were recipients of birthday greetings. A committee meeting is to be held in the Community Centre on March 19th at 1.30 p.m. The April programme is as follows:—Flower: Iceland poppy; vegetables: one each of any throe of the following, cabbage, carrot, parsnip, onion, potato and beetroot; demonstration: ~».5 mats. Members desiring to make these, are requested to bring their own canvas, roll call: a household hint. Hostesses. Mesdames E. Reid, Jenkins, Blackler and Miss Oldfield. Airs. Mayliew presented a very comprehensive report on the year’s activities, disclosing much useful endeavour, and in the unavoidable absence cf Mrs. Moray, she also presented the flnan cial statement, and after all expenses were dealt with, showed a good credit balance. Mrs. Heayns reported on the soldiers’ parcels and mentioned that altogether 56 parcels had been despatched in the last year, which was really a very good effort. Thanks were extended to all helpers for their untiring work in packing parcels. The president (Airs. W. E. Baker) thanked everyone for the help given her in the past year and said that altogether, despite war conditions, the year had been very successful. Mrs. D. Reid and others also expressed their appreciation of having alternate meetings In the Sunday School rooms. Airs. Alason then took the chair and it was unanimously decided that the present committee stand for another year en bloc with the addition of two new members to replace others who had resigned. Nominations were taken for president and Mrs. Baker, being the only nominee, was re* elected. Committee members are Mesdames Mayhew, Moray, P. Simpson, D. Reid, J. Simpson, R. Lang, Thomas, Fraser, V. Reid, Blackler, Wilton, junr., and Walker. Competition results were:—Dahlia: Mrs. Heayns 1, Mrs. Barber 2; cream puffs. Airs. Lamberton 1, Mrs. Heayns 2. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames D. Reid, Thomas, Thurston and Heayns.
