AUCKLAND'S CHANCE IN THE THOMPSON HANDICAP On the face of it, and taking form as a guide, the Thompson Handicap, £1250 $ race on the Wellington programme at Trentliam on Saturday, might well prove a plum for one of the Auckland representation, which is particularly strong, comprising Neenali, .Monte Cristo and Royal Merit (states the Auckland Star). Neenah, the topweight, 9.4, has proved himself an outstanding sprinter this season, winning no fewer than five races, the last at Te Arolia ten days ago while carrying 9.8. Weight, docs not trouble this Foxbridge gelding, and as he has been running on solidly at the end of all his races, he is entitled to serious consideration. He is also engaged in fixe Railway Handicap, with 9.9. but appears to have brighter prospects in the Thompson. Monte Cristo, 8.0, lias not yet struck the fine form which distinguished his efforts two seasons ago, but he has been working attractively, and at Te Arolia was narrowly beaten by Cambria over a mile in 1.39 3-5. And now for Royal Merit, third horse from this province. The chestnut son of Mr. Standfast and Ithaca will be having his first race since leaving the hack class, and he has already been installed a screaming hot favourite. His form during recent months has been nothing if not impressive, and the manner in which he carried 9.4 in the van all the way to win the Hamilton Hack Cup confirmed the previous opinion that he is a galloper above the ordinary. It is in his favour, too, that, like Neenah, he knows the Trenthanx track, as lie ran a first and a second there in January. The writer cpnsidered that Royal Merit and Neenah would be the favourites. INCREASED STAKES FOR HAWKE’S BAY AUTUMN MEETING Stakes have again been increased for the autumn meeting of the Hawke's Bay Jockey'Club on March 27th and April 3rd, the programme for which .has now been issued. The club is making liberal allowances for horses from outside the Hawke’s Bay district. The stake for the Hawke’s Bay Cup has once more been increased, this time by £IOO, making the stake now £SOO.
