Pahiatua Patriotic Gala Day

AN UNQUALIFIED SUCCESS Sponsored by the Pahiatua Patriotic Entertainers, the Grand Patriotic Gala Day Garden Party which was held at Carnival and Rugby Parks on Saturday, proved to be from every aspect, an unqualified success. The weather was gloriously line and au excellent varied programme was provided to some 2000 or 3000 people. The town and district stalls were most attractive and the judging resulted iu the MaugamaireMarima and Mangataiuoka stalls being adjudged equal. Last year the eup was won by Mangamaire-Marima, and it was proposed that they should hold it for the first six months of the ensuing year. However, Mr. M. Lawson, who received the cup at the dance iu the evening, asked the Mangatainoka Committee to accept the decorative cup for the first period as a compliment to Mangamaire-Marima ’s worthy opponents who also took the honours for the largest stall returns. The Manawatu Pipe Band which was in attendance, rendered stirring items and gave a fine display of marching. The outstanding feature of the day i'was the brilliant display of guard marching and drill performed by the Mangamaire Platoon of the Home Guard. The music was supplied by the Manawatu Pipe Band and the performance reflects great credit on SergeantMajor Stanton who was in charge of the men. The Grand Parade was led by the Manawatu Pipe Band, followed by the Home Guard units, the W.W.S.A., Red Cross, competitors in dancing classes (in costume) and entrants for the horse sports, on their mounts. The takings at the stalls were as follows: Mangatainoka, £235 2s 6d; Makuri, £220 is lid; MakomakoMangahao, £lO2 3s; Pahiatua, £73 17s 7d; Ngaturi-Kohinui. £52 17s 3d; Mangamaire, £49 8s lid; Ballance, £42 3s; Mangamutu, £4O 10s; Kaitawa, £37 5s lOd; Konini, £2l ss. In the evening over 600 people attended the dance in the Drill Hall. Messrs. P. Jackson, I. Merrip, G. Taylor and G. Tataurangi provided excellent music, while extras were supplied by Mrs. Tait, and Miss N. Burgess. The sum of £9O was taken at the door. THE HORSE SPORTS SOME EXCELLENT RIDING The horse sports attracted great interest at the Gala Party and some excellent displays of horsemanship were seen. Organised by the Pahiatua Horse Sports Club, the programme was varied and thoroughly enjo3 r able. The action of the Horse Sports Club in paying the entrance money (£4 17s 6d) into the Appeal Fund and providing the prizes out of their own funds is to be commepded as a pleasing patriotic gesture. The results were as follows: — Musical chairs: W. Olsen 1, J. Bisset 2, E. Brown 3. Musical chairs for children: Master 8. Draper 1, Miss Eglinton 2, Master J. Moynalian 3. Children’s flag race; Master 8. Draper 1. Miss Eglinton 2, Master R. Hewitt 3. Flag race: D. Bicknell 1, W. Olsen 2, N. .Bicknell 3. Orange race: W. Olsen 1, E. Olsen 2.
