Opiki Dahlia Shew

(From Our Own Correspondent.) For the Annual Dahlia Show of tlio Opiki Gardeu Circle, there was a record number of entries (U 35) and the committee is to be congratulated on its excellent work. The judge of dahlias and gladioli, Mr. A. J. Shailer (P.N.), said Opiki had this year put on a display even better than the Hutt Valley show. The Opiki Gladioli Cup was this year won outright by Miss L. Larsen (Opiki) who has gained the points prize in this section three years in succession. The judge of the vegetable section, Mr. Galland (P.N.), was amazed at the quality and quantity of vegetables and fruit displayed, there being as many as 20 entries in each class. Mrs. Will (Rongotea) judged the miscellaneous and Mrs. Galland the decorative. Mrs. Krivan, leader of the Garden Circle, thanked the Secretary, Mrs. Aitchison, and all members of the Circle for their co-operation, the exhibitors, those who donated special prizes, vegetables or donations towards the parcel fund. As a result of this special effort, once again our soldiers’ parcel fund would substantially benefit. Mrs. Will, who is a member of the Manawatu W.I. Executive, opened the Show and congratulated the Garden Circle on its fine display. In the evening the President of the W. 1., Miss L. Coolcsley, presented the cups and special prizes as follows: Open Dahlias: Points prize (Jackson Cup), Mr. Silson (P.N.); Champion giant, Mrs. Hunt (Rongotea); champion under Sins., Mr. Silson; points prize (W.I. members, Watchorn Cup), Mrs. Robinson; champion W.I. dahlia, Mrs. Robinson; champion of champions, Mrs. Hunt; L. & hi. Silver Vases (small dahlias), Mrs. Robinson. Gladioli: Points prize (Opiki Cup), Miss L. Larsen; “Miss New Zealand”, 11. Stokes (Tokomaru); champion spike, Mr. H. Stdkes; points prize (miscellaneous), Mrs. W. Jackson; champion bloom, Mrs R. Barrie (Levin). Open Decorative points, Miss E. Barrie; W.I. decorative points, Mrs. W. Jackson. Points Vegetables and Fruit, Mr. S. T. Brown (P.N.) Points, children over .10, Mary Horn; points children under 10, Heather Horn. Most Points in the Show: Mr. Silson (P.N.). The stewards and hostesses were Mesdames Larsen, Robinson, Wilde. Mabey, Gordon Smith, Patterson, Graham Smith, Jackson, Everleigh, Sames, Percy Olsen, Henderson, Wilson and White, Misses Wilson, Sames and Cooksley. Winners of competitions were: Mrs. Coulter (Shannon) and K. Anderson (Tokomaru). After the hall had been cleared local musicians played for dancing. Mr. J. Aitchison was M.C.
