Record Takings at Boys’ High School Gala

£290 PROM SATURDAY’S EFFORT. The Parents’ Association of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School could not have had better weather for their gala day held at the School, Featherston .Street, on Saturday, the day being gloriously fine. Much enthusiastic preparation had been undertaken to ensure the success of the function which resulted in the record amount of £290 being raised for school amenities. This was all the more pleasing in that it was the first occasion on which raffles and games of chance had been ruled out. Parents and friends responds most generously and the stalls arranged in tents on the lawn ■were laden with tempting goods which found ready sale. At an opportune moment, the Rector, Mr. J. Murray, offered a

general welcome and introduced Mr. A. A. Langley, chairman of the Parents’ Association and Mr. M. H. Oram, chairman of the Board of Governors, who opened the function. Mr. Langley returned thanks to all who had assisted, particularly the parents, pupils and the business people who had been most generous. Hd mentioned that the sale of badges by the boys had realised £BB 19s, of which one boy sold £lO and another £8 12s 6d. Before declaring the function open Mr. Oram commended the excellent work of the Parents’ Association of both High Schools in providing amenities which would otherwise have to be dono without. He paid tribute to the efforts of the chairman (Mr. Langley), the treasurer (Mr. J. A. West), and secretary (Mr. B. Abraham) and their fellow-members of the committee. Mr. Murray conveyed an expression of thanks from the school which was given in hearty cheers.

Following were the stalls and stallholders: —Sweets, Mesdames W. Bowden, Faulkner and J. Mewett; flowers, Mrs. C. G. Perrin, Misses J. Allen and N. Stuart; produce, Mesdames H. Palmer and G. Bennett; novelties and white elephant, Mesdames A. W. Hudson and D. Rabonc; cakes, Mesdames G. Connal and D. Black; tea Toom, Mesdames A. A. Langley, A. E. R. Jobiin and J. L. Nash, assisted by Misses E. Laurenson, S. Kirkland, P. Britton, P. Owen, L. McGhie, L. Drummond, R. Sheppard and V. Kendall; Icecreams, and soft drinks, Messrs. G. Bennett, C. G. Perrin, W. Bowden and Hancock. Numerous games, such as darts, skittles, 'treasure hunt, etc, were in charge of the boys; also a coffee and biscuit stall. Proceedings were enlivened by the presence of the City Silver Band with selectoins, and during the afternoon the Cadet Battalion in charge of Major H. W. Kerr gave an excellent demonstration of battalion assembly, marching and dismissal, the boys being commendablv stoady and marching with nice military precision. A handsome cake made and donated by Mrs. Benison and another donated by Messrs. Boniface Bros, provided interest for weight-guessing competitions.
