Manawatu Croquet Players Farewell Mrs. L. Oliver

Members of the Manawatu Croquet Club entertained Mrs. L. Oliver at a farewell afternoon on the eve of her departure to take up residence in Christchurch. On arrival at the greens, Mrs. Oliver, who was smartly attired in a navy and white tailored frock, was 'presented with a shoulder spray of cyclamen, the personal gift of Mrs. Benfell, a club-mate of long standing. The tables ia the pavilion were gay with bowls of dahlias, the artistic work of Mrs. Simmons. In presenting Mrs. Oliver with a pair of gloves, a small token of love and esteem, from the club members, Mrs. Snelling, club captain, expressed regret at Mrs. Oliver’s departure after a membership of over sixteen years, in which time she had given valuable service to all sections of the club. Her kindly help and friendship was appreciated by all. Mrs. McMurray, as president of the Croquet Association, also spoke of the great loss, not only the croquet section, but also Palmerston North was sustaining in the departure of Mrs. Oliver from the city. She had been a most active member in all patriotic activities, efficient and reliable at all times and ever willing to help in matters for the benefit of all and her place would be very hard to fill. Mesdames Radford and Northey also paid tribute to Mrs. Oliver and her association with the club. Returning thanks for the kindly references to her services, Mrs. Oliver said she would never forget her long and happy association with the club in all its activities. Anything she had done she had found it a great pleasure and loved every minute of her time spent on the greens. Among the visitors were Mesdames McMurray, McDonald, Gambrill, Brown, and Lee. The afternoon was brought to a close with “musical honours” for the departing guest.
