Methodists and Dances

CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 25. It has been a long established practice of Methodists that their church properties cannot be used for dances. The subject of dancing generally, was discussed at the Conference to-day when a proposal was submitted that dancing in any church be left to the discretion of the leaders. After a long debate the Conference referred the remit to the Church Welfare Committee for consideration. Rev. A. G. Johnston (Auckland) declared that dancing was already indulged in under a variety of names. Young people saw the anomaly in the situation and few Methodists protested against it. An entirely new situation hud arisen, said Rev. G. Goodman (Auckland) witli ncen coming back from overseas. What was more natural than to welcome them home at a dance? he asked. Rev. Everil Orr: “If we open our churches to dancing, liquor will be introduced. The statement met with a chorus of “No, certainly not.”
