Virtue in Sternness
“We call for Christian Order that we may have Christian liberty,” said the Archbishop of New Zealand, speaking at AJI Saints’ Church, Palmerston North, last evening. “It is quite true that the word ‘order’ has a note of sternness about it. But is not that just what our age lacks? A prominent loader said New Zealand needs more kindness and truthfulness and it will be all right. Kindness is a splendid virtue but as a recent writer observes, its danger is that it becomes softness. And so often like charity it begins at home. War brings us face to face with the need for tho sterner virtues of courage, loyalty, patience and discipline. Without these the fabric of society will decay. And these arc traditional Christian virtues; kindness will not take their place. Our campaign for Christian Order docs strike this note. Wo have no easy way to preach, no way of by-passing tho Cross, but a call to be heroic in men and women, in Church and State. There must be Christian Order in personal life, in church life, in society and in the State.”
