German Front Lines Pushed Back

(By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) Received Wednesday, 11 p.m. LONDON, Oct. 28.

Moscow reports continued fighting in the Stalingrad area and north-east of the Black Sea port of Tuapse. No changes took place on the otnbr fronts.

In the Stalingrad area, the enemy arc still using large forces of tanks and infantry. The Germans advanced along two streets in the city, but only at the cost of many men and much material.

Outside Stalingrad, the Germans unsuccessfully attempted to recapture a village retaken by Soviet troops a few days ago. Rumanian forces have suffered heavy casualties.

Timoshenko's relief drives from the north-west and from the south of Stalingrad are at last apparently importantly affecting the general position. The Russians in the south, pushed back the German front line beyond the city's boundaries and the Russians in the north-west, simultaneously captured a strategic village near Stalingrad s most northern suburbs. Both German flanks are now brought to the defensive. Reports from Stockholm say the German High Command, through the Red Cross, offered the Russians a four-day suspension of hostilities around Stalingrad to enable both sides to pick up wounded and bury the dead. The Russians agreed with the stipulation that the terms of the agreement should be published in Germany, but the Germans refused whereupon negotiations terminated. Practical stalemate prevails in the factory area. Rodimstev still directs the resistance from his cellar headquarters which are like a coalmine with tree trunks buttressing the walls.
