Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association

The annual meeting of the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association was held last night, Mr. J. T. McDonald presiding. Speaking to the annual report, as already published, the chairman said that, owing to war conditions, the past season had not been a very successful one, and the prospects did not appear any brighter ihis year. It was possible that several more clubs might have to close up this year. The shortage of balls was also going to make matters more difficult, but it was hoped, that representations which nad been made by the New Zealand Association to the Minister of Supply with the idea of securing balls from overseas, would bear fruit. Financially the association was in a good position. ufficers for the ensuing year were elected as follow: President, Mr. McDonald; vice-presidents, Drs. E. C. Barnett and S. J. Thompson; lion, secretary, Mr. R. O. Haddon; treasurer, Mr. C. C. fates; management committee, Messrs C. 11. Tate, M. J. Barrett, D. W. Creed, W. M. Sexton, W. E. Bowden, J. C. Johnston and Dr. F. G. Scott; auditor, Mr. R. H. Spencer; sole selector, Air. Sexton; delegates to New Zealand Association, Dr. Thompson and Alessrs S. J. Castle and AlcDonald. With a view to helping clubs, it was decided that any rebate in fees given by the New Zealand Association be passed on to those clubs affiliating for the coming season, together with an amount which would enable affiliation fees to be reduced by 66 2-3 per cent. Appreciation was expressed of the action of the New Zealand Association in endeavouring to secure balls from overseas. All club 6 are to be asked to supply the names of players who lose their lives on active service. Entries are to be invited from clubs for separate men’s and ladies’ competitions—or a mixed competition—on the understanding that players provide their own balls. Thanks were accorded to all who had assisted the association during the past year. Regret was expressed that, owing to his transfer lo Feilding, the management committee was losing the services of Mr. L. A. Reichenbach.
