Women’s Institutes

OROUA FEDERATION Mrs. W. G. Short, of Cheltenham, presided at the half-yearly council meeting of the Oroua Federation. Mrs. H. Barnicoat, a member of the Dominion executive, who was present, spoke of the work the institutes were doing. She recommended members to make use of the facilities at Dominion headquarters when visiting Wellington. The half-yearly ‘ report showed much activity, mostly war work. Two good service badges had been recommended. The financial report, presented by Mrs. A. K. Drew, of Sanson, showed a satisfactory position. It was decided to make a short-term Investment of £lO in the Liberty Loan. Mrs. Drew was elected to represent Oroua on the Dominion Council, and tribute was paid to the retiring representative, Mrs. G. B. Gregory, of Marton, for her excellent j work. Mrs. Bond, who was tho delegate j to the National Council of Women, gave | a brief report of activities, and Mrs. | Gregory reported on recent Dominion I Council meetings. Miss Jerome Spencer, 0.8. E., who was a visitor to the meeting, was accorded a very warm welcome. Mrs. A. McCorkindale spoke of tho good work of the institutes at the patriotic shop and with soldiers’ parcels. OPIKI The October meeting was well attended, Miss L. Cooksley presiding. Parcels for the local soldiers overseas were packed again this month, and letters of appreciation were received from A. Akers, B. Cooksley, L. Henderson and Mr. Pond. There was also a letter of resignation from Miss E. Matthews. Visitors were welcomed and donations for the leper and hospital funds were received. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. P. Krivan for making a felt knitting bag to present to Miss Spencer. It was decided to give a social evening for the children in December. The Garden Circle had a stall at the meeting and two delegates, Mrs. Irwin, and Miss L. Cooksley were appointed, for the half-yearly council meeting. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Wilde, Vile, Wilson and Miss R. Vile. Competitiohs resulted: —Bloom: Mrs. J. Aitchison, Ist. Miss M. Wilson, 2nd, Mrs. P. Krivan, 3rd; best lettuce: Mrs. P. Krivan. Ist; scones: Mrs. J. Cooksley, Ist. Competitions for next month will be a flowering shrub, bloom, posy and three biscuits without sugar, and the hostesses will be Mesdames Meech, White and Eveleigh. TABLE FLAT Miss Elliott presided over a good attendance at the October meeting which was held at the home of Mrs. Kilgour. Members are asked for donations at the Patriotic shop day to be held in Feilding on October 30th. Future competitions arranged are:—A loaf of white bread, a Christmas gift not costing more than 3s, and a jug of flowers. The C.L.S. project on “Vitamins and all That” was read and discussed. The monthly competition results were:—Decorative vase: Mrs. Pettigrew, Ist and 2nd, Mrs. Jensen, 3rd; gift for lepers: Miss P. Hogan, Ist, Mrs. E. Miller and Miss E. Jensen, 2nd equal. Mrs. A. F. McMurtrie and Mlbs R. Jensen, 3rd equal; sultana cake: Mrs. Hogan, Ist. Mrs. Jensen, 2nd, Mrs. E. Miller. 3rd; best bloom: Mrs. Jensen, Ist, Mrs. E. Miller, 2nd, Mrs. B. Miller, 3rd. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Kilgour and Miss E. Adams.
