“Near” Beer Will Lower Public Morale!
LEGISLATIVE COUNCILLORS ALARMED Per iress Association. WELLINGTON, May 9. “I feel that the Government have gone too far in this matter and I am sorry I believe there will be serious repercussions,” said Hon. T. Young in the Legislative Council on Saturday when referring to the lowering of the alcoholic content of beer which, he said, would make New Zealand beer definitely the weakest in the world. Hon. W. Perry said investigations in England and Wales in the last war showed that the public morale was low* ered by the increase in price and the decrease in the alcoholic content of beer. Both speakers were replying to strong criticism of the liquor trade by Hon. J. K. Archer who referred to after-hour trading, brewery profits and drinking by soldiers. He congratulated the Government on the higher price and less alcohol. This discussion took place on the Customs Act Amendment Bill which was put through all stages and passed together with the War Damage Amendment Bill.
