GERMAN ADVANCE ON MURMANSK BOGGED Received Thursday, 9.5 p.m. LONDON, Nov. 5.
The Times’ Stockholm correspondent says the scale of the fighting in the Leningrad area remains unchanged down to the southern end of the Valdai hills with the Russians persistently trying to open a wide passage from Leningrad. But all the more southern sectors to the Black Sea, including the Crimea, are now most active.
The battle for Kalinin keeps swaying -without shifting its centre in either direction more than a few miles. The Russians at the moment appear to have the advantage, but German reserves are constantly arriving. The more direct attack against Moscow through Volokalamsk, Mojaisk, Malo Yaroslavets and towards Serpukhov remains checked, but there is no cessation of attacks and counterattacks.
The German advance on Murmansk is still reported to be bogged on the Liza river, where communications are badly entangled. The Moscow radio announced that in a new offensive on the Leningrad front the enemy penetrated the Soviet defences at a few points, but the advance of the main German forces was checked. Russian troops are now counter-attacking. The Daily Telegraph’s Stockholm correspondent says the majority of Leningrad’s aircraft factories have been bodily transferred with trained personnel to Kazan, while the tank workshops at the giant Kirov works have been moved to Magintogorsk. The paper adds that it has been revealed that Russian submarines from Kronstadt are regularly forcing the GermanFinnish minefield across the mouth of the Gulf of Finland and are operating in wide areas in the Baltic, including Riga Bay.
