Junior Library Activities

PHENOMENAL GROWTH IN MEMBERSHIP With 2760 members now on its roll, the Palmerston North Junior Library has registered a phenomenal growth since its formation about three years ago. Alore than 5000 books are on it.; shelves, many of them being of a nature that the children would not otherwise have been able to obtain, i Every effort is being made to make the children feel that it is their own library, and they have their own committee, with Basil Drake as chairman and Joan Bigham as secretary. Book issues average over 200 a day, and last month the total was just under 6000. The activities of the library are not solely confined to providing the children with suitable books and getting them interested in reading, and educational and recreational projects are being encouraged. This week there is being held a stamp exhibition, and the members have provided an attractive display of about 20 sheets, neatly housed in glass showcases. When a reporter put his head inside tho Junior Library yesterday, he saw a class from the Intermediate School engrossed in study and displaying every sign of pleasure in their work. Hardly a day goes past without several classes being brought to the library. The value of the facilities provided was stressed by a teacher, who said the advantage of getting the children correctly started in reading and adding to their knowledge was inestimable.
