YESTERDAY’S MEETING At yesterday’s monthly meeting of the Woodville County Council tho chairman (Mr. M. O. Grainger) presided over Crs. J. M. Hutchinson, E. D. Cattanach, K. H. Morgan, E. W. Norman, A. Ramsden, W. Galloway, the clerk (Mr. J. M. Graham) and the engineer (Mr. W. J. Hawkes). Leave of absence was granted Cr. J. Mitchell. Mr. 11. Sheffield, one of the retired councillors, wrote acknowledging the council’s letter and expressing his appreciation for the help of the chairman and council during his 15 years of service as councillor. The live-stock division of the Department of Agriculture forwarded a certificate of renewal of a slaughterhouse license in respect of G. W. Fairley.— Received. The Woodville Borough Council conveyed thanks to the chairman for hia efforts in connection with the proposed work on the McLean Street south section of the WoodviJle-Masterton State ■ highway. Mr. W. Todd was nominated as the council’s representative on the Howard Estate advisory board. Mr. H. G. Barron authorised the council, with its men and equipment, to enter upon the land occupied by him at Oringi for the purpose of constructing the Oringi road deviation, the land to be acquired at the price to be fixed later by the Government land purchase officer. —The chairman reported that himself, Cr. Galloway and the engineer had conferred with the Commissioner of Crown Lands regarding the matter. The work involved the erection of a number of chains of fencing, and the matter was complicated by the acute shortage of posts. It was left to the engineer to endeavour to make some arrangements with regard to a supply of fencing posts. The Oil Fuel Controller appealed to the council to make every effort to reduce its petrol consumption to the absolute minimum.—The chairman stated that it had always been the council’s endeavour to conserve petrol. The following laud transfers were approved: —From Jones Bros, to A. M. Jones; from C. E. Galloway to K. McR. Galloway. The chairman, clerk and engineer were appointed to attend the joint counties’ conference to be held at Napier on Thursday, August 14. The -f-anawatu branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society solicited financial assistance from tne council. —Received. The Counties’ Association forwarded returns regarding the cost per day of maintaining patients in hospitals and the Social Security contribution (6s) toward same.—The matter was discussed and Cr. Cattanach was of the opinion that the difference should be paid from the War Expenses Account instead of by the ratepayers, especially in view of the future demand on the hospitals by returned soldiers. —The council agreed with this view and the chairman stated that the matter would be taken up by the conference. ‘ General In compliance with the previous resolution, the chairman moved and Cr. Galloway seconded, that the general and hospital rate bo struck as notified. Cr. Galloway mentioned some trees growing on railway property. near tho Graham’s Road crossing, and Cr. Norman spoke similarly with regard to tho Hopelands bridge. —To receive the engineer’s attention. The engineer’s suggestion that a number of bluegum trees be planted in the Ngawapurua reserve was adopted, aud he was authorised to procure and plant whatever trees he considers necessary. Accounts passed for payment totalled £1377 4s 3d.
