Rongotea

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The annual re union of the Rongotea R.S.A. attracted a large attendance of ex-servicemen, - including a number of returned men from Ohakea. Mr. E. Rowe was in the chair and proposed the loyal toast. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. G. Wen-*} burn, the secretary (who is at present j attending an instruction course at! Trentham), N. Remnant, B. Murphy,l B. J. Jacobs and R. M. S, Jones (Ilunterville). A convivial evening' was spent, the following being the toasts honoured:-—N.Z.R.S.A. Headquarters, proposed by Sergeant Gordon, J response by Mr. H. V. Bond; 2nd [N.Z.E.F., proposed by Mr. E. Bickford (Rata), response by Mr. R. Mudford; England and her Allies, proposed by Mr. M. Allen (Feilding), response by Sergt. Gordon; Visitors and Entertainers, proposed by Mr. H. Foster. Mr. R. Mudford, in his reply, gave a description of conditions of modern warfare, while the chairman spoke in terms of nigh praise of the way in which Mrs. Mudford had carried on the work of the farm in her husband’s absence. The programme for the evening was furnished by members of the forces from Ohakea as under:—-Songs, Aircraftman Stevenson; ventriloquism, L.A.C. Lunn; humorous items, Sergt. Gordon and L.A.C.’s East and Hancock. A hot supper was served by a willing band of “Mess-orderlies,” while Mr. C. Donovan conducted singing of old army choruses. School Committee A short meeting of the school committee was held on Monday evening, Mr. W. J. Amies presiding. Messrs. L. Simonson, C. M. Lind, 11. N. Rowe and W. A. Churchill (headteacher) were also in attendance. The chairman reported that a football had been procured for the boys and that various repairs at the school had been effected, including the overhaul of the heating system and the cleaning of the septic tank. There is a length of spouting on the school which has badly rusted through and will need immediate attention. The headteacher reported on the inspection visit by Messrs. B. N. Blake and E. Crosby early in July and that advice had been received that it would most likely be possible to extend the milk-in-scliools scheme to the school in the near future. Farewell Function A farewell function, to take the form of a concert and dance, will bo held in the Rongotea Hall on Friday evening, the opportunity being taken to bid farewell to Aircraftman V. McKenzie, of Carnarvon. Arrangements are well in hand and residents will welcome this chance to honour the son of well-known settlers of the district. Te Kawau Basketball A busy afternoon was spent by the finalists "in the Te Kawau basketball competition. First Marton defeated Kopane in the final for the northern end by 21 —IC. This was for the right to compete for the runners-up cup. In the final between (he winners of the northern and southern ends, Rangiotu defeated Rongotea by 21 goals to 10. Taikorea and Marton had next to play off for the right to clmlleuge as runnerup, the former winning a close and fa3t game by 21—20. Taikorea then played Rongotea for the final of the runner-up cup, and were successful by 23 goals to 16. The only competition now to be played is the scaled handicap, which will commence shortly, provided that there are sufficient entries.
