Did Churchill Meet Roosevelt?
PERSISTENT REPORTS IN AMERICA Received Thursday, 12.21 a.m. NEW YORK, Aug. 6. The frequently well-informed Maiini Herald, in a special despatch from Washington, quoted reliable diplomatic quarter 3 as asserting that President Roosevelt and Mr. Cnurchill conferred this afternoon aboard a ship in the North Atlantic. It is asserted, that British and Canadian sources said the conference occurred off New Brunswick, while others said it took place off Newfoundland. The New York Herald-Tribune’s Washington correspondent says, despite official disclaimers, reports persist that President Roosevelt, Mr. Churchill, Mr. Mackenzie King and Mr. Harry Hopkins are about to engage in a momentous conference in Canada or in mid-Atlantic. The purpose of the meeting is assumed to be a discussion of Anglo-American collaboration with special reference to Japan and the Pacific. Yachtsmen reaching Woodshole (Massachusetts) said they saw the yacht Potomac flying the President’s ensign off Nantucket Island this afternoon. The master of one yacht said shortly after passing Jjhe Potomac he passed a large Canadian vessel camouflaged heading into the sound along a route not ordinarily followed by large ships. It anchored westward of Vineyard Haven near where a number of large American warships have been seen all day.
