Women’s Institutes

STANWAY The June meeting was well attended, Miss Clero presiding. Members stood in silence in respect for those members who had recently suffered bereavement. The motto for the month was given by Mrs. J. Macfarlane. The financial report on the two euchre evenings held recently was read by Mrs. Harvey. 1 Miss Clere thanked the ladies who had helped with the making of cakes and donations of goods and cash for the soldiers’ parcels recently packed, j Notice was given that the Drama Circle are practising items for the forthcoming concert to be held Friday, July 4. Three padded quilts (double bod size) made by some of our mem-, bers were exhibited before being forwarded to the Lady Galway Guild. A further talk in the Golden Thread series, “Native Trees,” was given by Miss Clere who spoke on “The Lace Bark” or “Ribbon Wood.” Exhibits of the leaves and a piece of the trunk of the tree proved very interesting and a vote of thanks was accorded the speaker. Seedlings of this pretty native tree were also distributed to the members. Mrs. P. Simpson gave a demonstration of ‘ ‘ crayon embroidery ’ ’ | and the making of novelties from sugar | bag and felt. Members were keenly interested in these demonstrations, Mrs. Simpson being accorded a vote of | thanks - . Afternoon tea was served by j the hostesses Mesdames Green and Harvey and Misses Z. Jefferies and J. I Wilson. Competitions resulted:—Arts j and crafts (baby’s knitted singlet) | Miss J. Rosser 1, Mrs. Rosser 2; best j bloojn, Miss Clere 1, Mrs. Evered and Mrs. Rosser equal 2; cooking, wheatmeal scones, Mrs. J. Macfarlane 1, Mrs. Evered. Tho winner of the mystery parcel competition was Miss Nola Jefferies. A short competition conducted by Mrs. P. Simpson was won by Mrs. V. B. Short. Competitions for the July meeting will be best bloom, eggless and a piece of crayon embroidery, and the hostesses will be Mesdames Jeffries, Searancke, Ilumx>hreys and Miss Nola Jefferies.
