(From Our Own Correspondent.) The hall was packed to capacity last ! week at a social and dance sponsored 3 by the local Home Guard. The hall had \ been decorated with flags and ferns, the stage looking particularly attractive . with framed pictures of the King and ' Queen and a model crown. The supper was served by Home Guard members. Song 3 wero rendered by Mrs. J. Morris, accompanied by Miss J. Wood and elocutionary items by Miss B. Murphy. ■ A Home Guard song was rendered by < the composer, accompanied by the City Silver Band who also gave items. \ Colonel S. J. Closey, commander of the Gorge Battalion, spoke on the work of the Home Guard, and complimented the ' committee on their successful function. Euchre was held for non-dnneers and : the prizes were won as follows: Ladies, Mrs. Urlibom 1, Mrs. Harrad consola- 1 tion; men, Mr. Shepard 1, consolation I Mr. Bather ley. | There were nine present at Bible Class on Tuesday evening, held at Mr. E. Kuudsen’s residence. Miss E. Vautier presided over the class. At the conclusion Miss Vautier, on behalf of the class, presented Miss J. Wood, who is shortly to be married, with a gift in appreciation of her services as pianist, and wished her happiness for the future. At the weekly Red Cross meeting held on Wednesday before the usual lecture, Colonel S. J. Closey addressed members on how they would work in conjunction with the Home Guard if au emergency should arise. There was a poor attendance at the annual hall meeting held on Wednesday nigtli. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Messrs. J. Morris (chairman), A. Crawtord (secretary), L. Mewcombe (treasurer) and H. Wood, W. McMurray, C. Puklowski, F. Robinson, B. Dickson and E. Morris. The statement of accounts showed, a profit of £7 Is od, a reduction on last year’s balance. This has been brought about largely owing to a drop in hall hire of approximately £7. The income from (ho euchre functions this year was £sl ss, but the profit was very small. This was a disappointment to the committee, particularly as these functions entail a considerable amount of work and tho committee feels justified in expecting regular support from-the residents. If the hall is to be kept up local support must be given. A comuined function with the Women’s Institute again proved a success. Arrangements have been made for erecting the fence between the hall and Mr. Morris’s property and the material is already in hand. The alterations made to the hall left the committee with a considerable overdraft and for that reason it has been unable to see its way clear to carry on with the painting of the building as recommended at a previous annual meeting. Special thanks are due to Mrs. Crawford for her untiring work in the supper room, also Mr. A. Crawford, secretary, for the efficient manner in which, ho carried out his duties.
