America Locked in Mortal Combat With Germany
“NO ESCAPE IN ISOLATIONISM" Received Wednesday, 11.45 p.m. NEW YORK, April 29. The New York Times in a twocolumn editorial declares: “The United States is already locked in mortal combat with Germany. Therefore it would be most dangerous to follow a policy of drifting and hesitating. “The defence of America means strong leadership from Washington, willingness to forego methods of indirection and veiled inuendo in favour of a bold statement of the plain facts. “The defence of America also means firm insistence that strikes and lockouts in defence industries will no longer be tolerated. It means encouragement to American aviators now ready to fly our own planes In the Battle of Ericain. It means the avoidance of the mistake of doing too little and too late. “There is no escape in isolationism. If we decide in favour of the American tradition for the preservation of all we hold dear then we shall take our place in the line and play our part in the defence of freedom.” Fifty Congressional non-interven-tionists pledged “unalterable opposition' ’ to American convoys * ‘by whatever name they may be called” and voted to a petition to the Senate Foreign Acairs Committee to approve a resolution forbidding convoys when the committee begins consideration on April 30.
