U.S. to Patrol 2000 Miles of

Atlantic

Naval Building Ahead of Schedule NAVY CHIEF’S HEARTENING STATEMENT WASHINGTON. April 29. Admiral Stark, United States Chief of Naval Operations, said tonight that the United States naval patrols w'ould operate as far as 2000 miles into the Atlantic. The naval programme was, he said, ahead of schedule, and America mus* be prepared to share her resources, outside her own defence requirements, with Britain. This she would do. President Roosevelt also mentioned to-night that the naval patrols would not necessarily be sent only to areas outside the combat zones. Threats to sink United States ships were made in the Berlin Press yesterday when reference was made to the extension of the American Navy’s neutrality patrols. One paper said that America was asking for the quick and certain sinking of all United States ships. It was time, the article said, that the people of the United States realised what confronted America W'hen President Roosevelt’s lease-and-lend plan matured. A message from Antigua, in the Leeward Islands, says that a United States dredger arrived there to-day to dredge a harbour for use as a United States naval and air base. This is one of the British possessions over which the United States was granted the right to establish such bases.
