Anzac Service at Ballance The Anzac service at the Ballance School was celebrated as usual last Friday, the same being conducted by Rev. Mr. Combes. The Ballance platoon of the Home Guard, together with sections from Mangahao and Makomako, were on parade and were piped to the service by Piper R. M. Burns. The marching of the men to the strain of the pipes was excellent and indicated keen preparation. Shooting Season The shooting season opens on {Saturday morning next and the present indications are that bags will be good. Local lagoons have plenty of ducks at present, but au amazing thing is the frequent sudden departure of the game the night before the shoot. Woodville haunts are said to be very thick with duck this year. Fishermen on the rivers

report the presence of fairly plentiful ducks. The local branch of the Acclimatisation Society lias liberated 55 pheasants to-day and although these birds are more conspicuous by their absence, some sportsmen are bound to bring down au odd pheasant or two.

Miniature Riflo Shooting The Mangamutu Miniature Rifle Club held its weekly shoot on the range at the Drill Hall on Saturday night. There was a good attendance of riflemen aud it is pleasing to note that the shooting generally shows an improvement on the previous week, more particularly with the new members. The scores were as follow:—M. H. Coppell 99, W. Feasey 98, A. Tait 97, R. Y r owen 96, L. Heayns 96, H.- Gardner 96, E. Ryan 95, O. B. Udy 94, L. Parker 93 r R. Keats 93, W. W. Cook 90, R. Brady S 6, N. VV. Pottersen 82, K. Grove 72, M. F. Ryan 69, F. J. Maekay 62. The weekly shoot will in future be held on Friday night. Bowler Farewellcd. A pleasant function took place last week-end, when members gathered at the local bowling green to lnrewcll one of their popular playrs, Mr K. Pilkington, who is serving on the ground staff at Ohakea Aerodrome. Mrs. Pilkiugton and several ladies were also present. The president, Mr. T. L. Herbert, on ; behalf of the club, made a presentation of a water jug and goblets and eulogised not only the prowess at bowls of the dc parting guest but also the help and co--1 operation he had given to the club for many years past. Messrs. W. Brit land, R. H. Taylor and -i. Macrae endorsed what the president had said and re--1 ferred to the merits of Mr. Pilkiugton [ both on ml off'the green. Mr. Pilkington suitably replied and cheers were given for both Mr. and Mrs. Pilking- ' ton, to whom members personally e\- ; pressed regret at their departure and ■ best wishes for their future welfare. !
