Women’s Institutes

TE ARAKURA Mrs. H. M. Whisker presided in April, visitors being welcomed and Miss Maisie Johnston was elected a junior member. Mrs. W. E. Thomas was nominated for the executive of the Manawatu Federation and Mesdames D. McDowall and B. Burnham were chosen delegates to attend the annual council meeting. A new institute baby, Stanley David Perrin Galloway, was presented with a money box and P.O. savings account book. Mrs. P. Hansen was welcomed to tho meeting. Colonel Macaulay of Feilding, a retired officer of tho Salvation Army, was the speaker for the afternoon. The Colonel took as his subject “Social Problems” dealing with the varied experiences of an officer of the Salvation Army in that sphere. Being a fluent and interesting speaker Colonel Macaulay kept Iris listeners interested throughout and at the close of tho address answered many questions. Competition results were:—3 zinnias, Miss M. E. Hansen 1; lady’s spray and 3 buttonholes, Mrs. W. E. Thomas 1, Mrs. 11. M. Whisker 2, Mrs. J. J. Hume 3; juniors, Miss Olivo Thomas 1. Tho sale stall was in charge of Mrs. Thomas and the Red Cross stall and collection was attended to by Mrs. E. Whisker. The hostesses were Mesdames Sim and Fitzgerald. At a committee meeting subsequent to the annual meeting the following, officers were elected:—Sec-

retary, Miss M. E. Hansen; treasurer, Airs. B. Burnham; vice-presidents, Ales dames G. Firth and D. McDowall. Points and competition steward:—Mrs. G. Firth; Red Cross, Miss D. Parker; stall stewards. Miss Olive Thomas and Mrs. H. T. Sim. It was decided that every second institute meeting should be devoted to some war work. Competitions for May will be 3 chrysanthemums and a jar each of sauce, pickles and chutney. For June the competitions are best, flower in garden and a pair of mittens to be devoted to the forces. In A lay wool filled squares are asked for and a quilt will be made. TABLE FLAT Mrs. H. 11. Jensen presided at the April meeting in the absence of Mis 3 Elliott,. A discussion took place regarding the May meeting which is the occasion of the institute’s sixth birthday and details of this were left to be finalised at the committee meeting. Mrs. 11. Jensen has offered to make the birthday cake. An invitation is to be extended to the Apiti Women’s Institute to be present. Mrs. Miller read a letter of thanks to members who had donated fleeces to be spun by the blind, into comforts for the men at sea. Acknowledgment from a wireless trainee in Canada, who received a parcel packed by the institute, was received. Mrs. Miller was re-elected “Golden Thread’’ convener, and it was decided to carry on with the same subject again this year. Results of the competitions were:—Raspberry jam, Mrs. H. Jensen 1, Mrs. D. Hogan 2, Miss E. Jensen 3; vase or bowl of leaves and berries, Miss P. Hogan 1, Mrs. Jensen 2, Miss R. Jensen 3; best bloom, Miss P. Hogan 1, Mrs. Hogan 2, Miss E. Jensen 3. The garden circle meeting is to bo held at Mrs. Trim's. Afternoon tea -was served by Miss Rat* Jensen, who kindly acted in Mrs. Pettigrew ’s absence.
