There was a fair attendance at the annual meeting of the llalcombc branch of the 8.8. A. Tho balance sheet disclosed a. healthy position and a review of the past year s activities revealed that the association was continuing to assist, ex-servicemen aud their dependents in a. worthwhile manner. Tho names of Messrs. E. \4. Cowdrey and B. G. Burgess were submitted for the office of president aud in the ballot Mr. E. \V. Cowdrey was elected for the second successive year. Mr. R. G. Burgess will hold the office of vice-president and those elected to the committee were: Messrs. A. E. Prior, N. E. Ashworth, K. L. Eergussou, A. C. Boswell and AI. D. James. Air. R- D. Elgar was re-elected secretary and Air. .1. O’Sullivan will undertake the audit. Mr R. G. Burgess was appointed delegate to Feilding. It is Doped that m the near future Halcombe will be in ' eluded in the visiting itinerary of Hon. \V. Perry. The re-painting of the names on the soldiers’ memorial is to be undertaken at an early date. Alessrs. B. G. Burgess, R. D. Elgar and A. E. Prior agreed to address the children at the various schools on the significance oi Anzac Day. There was a record sale of poppies this year, the sum ot approximately £2l being collected. The Anzac Day service was largely attended. Ex-servicemen paraded at the school and, led by Mr. E. W. Cowdrey, marched to tho Jubilee Hall, where the service was conducted by Colonel D. Macauley (Salvation Army). Mrs. E. G. Burgess was organist and solos were rendered by Airs. D. -N. Uill,, ! eliding. Prayers were offered by Air. D. N. Gill and a* Scriptural passage was read by Mr. H. J- Dewe. Colonel Alacauiey delivered an interesting address, in the course of which he paid tribute to those Anzacs who had made the supreme eacnlice in a memorable effort to maintain the ideals of democracy. At the conclusion of the service those present gathered at the Soldiers’ Memorial, where “Abide With Ale” was sung, various wreaths were laid and the “Last Post” sounded. The Halcombe Women s Patriotic Committee reports that during April the l'ololwing knitted goods were forwarded to Zone E headquarters, Feilding: lwo pullovers, five balaclavas, live scarves. Goods forwarded by the Stanway Sewing Guild were: Six scarves, three pairs of. socks, one pair mittens, one balaclava. A. set of knitted comforts was presented to Aircraftman A. Lord on the occasion of a complimentary function. In the sewing section many garments were distributed to be repaid, and peggy . squares knitted by the Halcombe school girls and members of the committee were taken by Mrs. A. Schaeren, who I undertook to make them into bcdco^is.
