Cheap Process for Extracting Magnesium
Received Sundav. 6.30 p.m. TORONTO, April 26. A new, speedy and cheap process for extracting magnesium, a metal vital to defence industries, from dolemitic limestone which abounds in the United States and Canada was announced today by Mr. Ralph Keemle, a Hamilton metalurgist. Tho process involves electro-thermic reduction and has be.en tested in a small laboratory unit before metalurgists and chemists at Hamilton. Toronto University analysts describe the product as of fine quality. The Keemle reduction process involves heat treatment of limestone in an electric furnace and the particles of tho metal thus isolated are shock-cooled by gas held in suspension in crude oil.
