Notorious for Selling Liquor Without License

CLUB PROPRIETRESS HEAVILY PINED Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, April 23. ! “Since early in 1936 this club has ■ been most notorious for selling liquor without a license,” said Bub-Inspector Pender when Amy Higgins, of the Glendowie Country Club, pleaded guilty in the Police Court to three charges of being privy to the sale of liquor at the club, two of permitting the consumption of liquor in a dance hall and two of permitting liquor to be consumed in a restaurant. Numerous complaints had been received concerning the conduct of the club, said Inspector Pender. Many ol the patrons were noisy and it was alleged that some wore seen leaving under the influence of liquor. Early on the morning of March 23 a search warrant was executed aud 163 pints and 20 quarts of beer were seized, in addition to small quantities of spirits. Residents of the locality had more than once begun a petition urging the removal of the club. Counsel said requests from many people, including men in the forces, for the sale of liquor had been refused by defendant until a number of Australian airmen had attended the club, when she foolishly yielded. Members of the various services were often in Auckland for only a short period aud were unable to obtain liquor elsewhere. Most of the liquor seized belonged lo patron, and club members, who were not ex pected to claim it from the police. “It is clear the sale of liquor was quite extensive,” said Mr. J. Morling, S.M. Defendant was fined £ls on each of the first three charges and ordered to pay costs on the others.
