(From Our Own Correspondent.) Mr. and Mrs. E. Titcombe, Cook Street, have returned home from a holiday visit to Napier, Taupo and Kotorua. Adjutant J. Gower and Captain 1. Mann, of Wellington, of the .Salvation Army, have taken over the work in Foxion, Captain Wellington and Cadet Jackson having been transferred to Wellington. Mr. E. A. Field, president of the New Zealand Beekeepers* Association, left yesterday for Timaru to attend the aurual meeting of tho South Island producers. A well-known and esteemed Foxton resident, in the person of Mrs. Laura Sutherland, relict oc the late Mr. Donald Sutherland, passed away in the Palmerston North Hospital on Saturday, April 5. Deceased was born in Waipiwa in 1973 and was tho eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Kennedy, later of Rongotea. She spent the greater part of her life in the lianawatu district and during her residence in Foxton took a keen interest in the Presbyterian Church and the Ladies’ Guild. She is survived by one son, Mr. O. Sutherland, of Foxton, and four sisters* and three brothers. Tho sisters are Mcsdames Green (Palmerston North), Bee (Havelock North), Cripps (Whatoro) and Lcaha (Bulls). The brothers are Messrs. A. Kennedy (Palmerston North), D. Kennedy (Palmerston North) and J. Kennedy (Bulls). Miss D. Sutherland, of Foxton, is a niece of the late Mrs. Sutherland. Magistrate’s Court Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided over the monthly sitting of the Foxton Magistrate’s Court. M. H. Exton was charged with being found illegally on the licensed premises of the Foxton Hotel on March 20. Arising out of the *ame case, G. Rough was charged with serving Exton with liquor and J. F. Grant, licensee of the hotel, was charged with selling liquor after hours. Ex ton was fined £1 with costs 12s: Rough £2, with coats 10a; and Grant £5, with costs 10s. The Transport Department proceeded against the Hawke’s Bav Reinforcing Co. Ltd., on two charges of overloading on the Himatangi highway on January 17. Defendant was fined £l, with costs 10s on each charge. The Transport Department also proceeded against V. Lumbve (1), for operating a goods service in a controlled area < Longburn-Foxton) on January 27, and (2), with operating a vehicle without a Heavy Traffic License. On each charge defendant was fined 10s with costs 10s. f-okingo yJm-o amesvp Bowling and Croquet The official closing of the Foxton bowling gTecn and croquet lawns for the present season took place on Saturday afternoon. Two rinks from tho Levin Central Bowling Club visited Foxton for the occasion and the matches played against the local rinks resulted as follows:—Foxton: Gregory, H. Robson, R. Haydock, R. Heppner 2G; Levin: Poad,»Young, Wilson, Bailey 26. Foxton: M. E. Perreau, T. Hughes,. D. Christie, H. Alnttar 19; Levin: Pine, Bell, Holdaway, Laugelan 19. Mr. Christie also took opportunity to thank the ladies of the croquet club for their co-operation throughout the past season. Airs. M. E. Perreau (president) acknowledged the remarks and then presented the trophies which had been uon during the season. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies. Football lu a match played on Easton Park ou Saturday afternoon, before a good attendance of spectators, the FoxtonMoutou seniors Vere defeated by a team from the military camp by 22 points to 13. The referee was Mr. W. Williams. The Foxton-Moutoa third-grade players visited Levin on .Saturday afternoon, and, in a match ugainst Athletic thirds, were defeated by 12 points to 8. Junior players are requested to be at Easton Park at 7.15 this evening for a practice. The basketball season commenced 10-ally ou Saturday afternoon, when pructice matches were played on Victoria Park by the members of the Foxton Basketball Club. Miss S. Barron acted as referee.
